Steven Kaczerski and Loan Vu met as Hospitality Management students at Mercyhurst University in a snowy little city called Erie in Pennsylvania, United States. Loan is a native of Vietnam who always dreamed of studying abroad, but didn’t realize she was cut out for the hospitality industry until she took an intro course at Mercyhurst. Steven arrived already knowing he had a passion for restaurants and hospitality after years of working at various different restaurants near his home outside Philadelphia. A few years after graduation, they relocated to Vietnam, got married and opened S&L’s Diner, the first and only American Diner in Hanoi in December 2016.
When S&L’s Diner came to town on Christmas’s Eve 2016, it was definitely a huge step for the young couple. We started out with a limited menu featuring Steven’s very own recipes of his idea of American comfort food. Over the years, as the diner’s popularity grew, so did the menu. S&L’s Diner now features a bar and an expansive menu to satisfy all cravings, from all day breakfast to appetizers, burgers, sandwiches and desserts, etc. Our variety of chef- inspired American comfort food is said to have carved out a unique niche in Hanoi’s crowded restaurant market.
S&L’s Diner’s concept is about the food and drink of course, but it’s also about our team, our facilities, our practices, and the hundreds of decisions we make each day that affect the world around us. We believe it’s about finding a balance, which allows us to sustain our quest of making quality, accessible food, while also giving back to our staff, our community and the environment.
